How to prepare DXF and STEP files for sheet metal fabrication

How to prepare DXF, STEP and PDF files for laser cutting, CNC bending, welding and quote requests.

Quote checklist

  • Technical file
  • Material grade
  • Thickness
  • Quantity
  • Finish and tolerances

Files that speed up quoting

For flat laser-cut parts, send DXF or DWG files with clean contours. For bent or assembled parts, send STEP files together with a dimensioned PDF drawing.

Include manufacturing details

Add material grade, thickness, quantity, tolerances, bend directions, weld locations, thread details and finish. If a face is visible or critical, mark it clearly.

Common issues to avoid

Open contours, duplicate lines, missing scale, unspecified material and missing bend information slow down quoting. A short note about how the part is used often helps manufacturing feedback.

Best RFQ package

Send DXF for profiles, STEP for 3D geometry, PDF for tolerances and a short email with quantity, finish and delivery target.

Send the project for review

Upload the technical file and we will review manufacturing feasibility, price and lead time.

A complete RFQ package removes assumptions

Use DXF or DWG for flat cutting contours, STEP for the final 3D geometry and a dimensioned PDF for functional tolerances, threads, weld symbols and finish notes. The files should describe the same revision. Include material grade, thickness, quantity, visible faces, coating or surface treatment, packing requirements and target delivery date. If an alternative material or manufacturing method is acceptable, state it explicitly.

Final check before upload

  • all files use the same units and revision
  • flat and formed geometry agree
  • critical dimensions are identifiable
  • welds, threads and finishes are specified
  • quantity and delivery target are included
